Buderim Ginger and Bistro C in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast

In this episode, Vic Cherikoff travels to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and visits the town of Yandina which is the home of the famous Buderim Ginger Factory. After learning about ginger production, Vic heads off to Bistro C, right on Noosa Beach.

The first ginger was planted in Buderim after a parcel of ginger plants was given to Mr. A.J.Burnett just after World War One. He planted them in his mandarin orchard at Greenmount. The plants flourished and became the root stock for an entire industry. Before moving to Yandina in 1978, the neighbouring ‘Merrybud’ Ginger Factory was the only highly-mechanised ginger factory in the world and the only plant in the southern hemisphere where ginger was processed in all forms.

Nowadays, The Buderim Ginger Factory, at Yandina on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland is a tourist attraction and working ginger factory. There are rides, tours of the factory and shops, restaurants and other exhibits for visitors to enjoy. You can even get a range of delicious Australian flavoured ice creams at their kiosk, a range on which Vic Cherikoff worked on their devlopment.

Buderim ginger is unique, noted for its quality and mild taste, a golden colour, low sulphur and fibre. Vic took some of the rhizomes he harvested to Bistro C, located on Noosa’s main beach overlooking the crystal clear water of Laguna bay. Here Executive Chef, Dayle Merlo cooked a number of dishes using Buderim Ginger including a Thai style whole snapper, king prawn salad with avocado salsa and a dessert of ginger poached pears. Bistro C has a warm and casual atmosphere all year round and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
